Michaels System information.

I have a StrongARM RPC with 50 meg, of which 32 meg is allocated to the PC card. I have Aleph Cyrix 586 with 128k catch and PCPro 3.03 which I run with the Direct X driver in 256 colours at 800 x 600 resolution. This seems to give the best balance between speed and display. The main problems that I experience are sound dropout and slowness in updating animations in some programmes. These occur where there is a lot happening and in my opinion is caused when the processor is working flatout.

If anyone would like any further information on any DK CD roms then please Email me. There are some "special deals" available from time to time and I try to keep folks informed. Michael Carpenter michael.carpenter@argonet.co.uk

1) My First Incredible Amazing Dictionary v2.0. Great for 3yrs upwards, good selection of games and activities, good sound and animations. Works well on PC card with good speed and no problems. My 3 year old loves it - helps with computer skills.

2) My First Amazing British Isles Explorer. "A geographical learning adventure to inspire, entertain and educate". For 5-9 year olds, good sound and graphics, works well with no problems. My 11 year old spent hours playing this.

3) Learning Ladder - Maths, Reading, Writing. "Follow Woody the animated pencil on the second step of a complete curriculum based learning system for three to eleven year olds". This is the 5-7 year old CD. A lot of fun with excellent graphics, animation and sound. I like Woody, so do my kids! Works well despite "busy" screens, you need to watch out because some features are not implemented ie trying to "tape record your voice" will crash it!

4) Now I'm Reading - Penquin and Bear guide children through four fun games which teach early reading skills. Corriculum based. Good cartoon style graphics, good animation and sound, works at good speed on card with no problems.

5) My First Maths Adventure - Adding and Subtracting. Curriculum based and teaches the fundamentals through fun games. For 5-8 year olds. Penguin and Bear again in good cartoon style graphics, sound and good speed with no problems.

6) World Reference Atlas. Just about everything you ever wanted in an atlas. Not just maps but a wealth of background information. Needs 32k colours to do it justice. 256 gives incorrectly coloured menu screens. Works fine on card at reasonable speed.

7) History Of The World 2.0 - "The worlds best selling history encyclopedia. Suitable for all ages, this is a valuable reference work. Works OK on card at reasonable speed with good graphics and sound. Animations are slowish and a little sound breakup when processor busy.

8) Encycopedia of Science 2.0 - suitable for all ages - covers science across the spectrum and fun to browse. Works OK on card at reasonable speed with good graphics and sound. Animations sluggish when processor busy.

9) Encyclopedia of Nature 2.0 - similar to "science" and "history" above - same comments apply.

10) Encyclopedia of Space and the Universe - "the ultimate interactive guide to space". Comments as above apply.

11) Earth Quest - "the interactive guide to the forces and forms of our dynamic planet". Similar to the above packages and the same comments apply.

12) New Way Things Work - In David Macauley animated styles. Helps kids 7+ to understand scientific principles in an entertaining way. The "Bill Gates homage" makes you cringe. Works well on card with good speed, graphics and sound and no problems.

13) Redshift 3 - A desktop planetarium of astonishing scope. Suitable for all ages, beginner or expert. Works on card reasonably well and the animations are OK but needs 32k colours.Minimum spec is 100Mhz Pentium so the card is being pushed to the limit!

14) Atlas Of The Solar System - 3D mappings of real space images. An interactive atlas. Superb program. Works on card but struggles. Really needs 100mhz+ Pentium.

15) Ultimate Human Body - discover how the human body works in 3D. Works OK on card with reasonably quick animations, sound and graphics but really needs a faster processor.
